Sub-Badge 1: Gap Analysis
Planning and Analysis
Challenge 1: Conducting a gap analysis
Criteria for successful completion of this challenge: This challenge focuses on conducting a gap analysis to describe the nature of a learning or performance problem and propose a potential instructional and/or non-instructional solutions and strategies. Gap analysis is a process of determining the gap between actual situation and desired situation as well as the root causes of this gap. Reflection must address: How did you determine or identify the learning or performance problem, including data sources you used? How did your artifact demonstrate your competence in each of the performance statements?
Examples: Performance Assessment and Design and Develop HPT Solutions and Evaluation Plan (EDCI 528); Design Document 1 (EDCI 572), Project Plan (EDCI 569 if taken in Spring 2021 or later).
Reflection
In the development of the Food Photography Composition module, I conducted a comprehensive gap analysis to identify the specific needs within the target audience of aspiring food photographers. This analysis was pivotal in establishing a clear understanding of the existing skills of these photographers compared to the advanced competencies required to produce high-quality food imagery that could significantly enhance their professional output.
The gap analysis involved a detailed evaluation of current educational offerings and direct feedback from industry professionals, which highlighted a significant gap in targeted, practical compositional skills. By comparing the current educational scenarios with the desired skill sets derived from industry standards, I was able to clearly delineate the specific areas lacking in existing training programs. This process not only solidified the instructional goals of the module but also helped in designing tailored content that addresses these gaps effectively.
Through this exercise, I gained valuable insights into the systematic process of instructional design, particularly the importance of accurately defining and addressing performance gaps. The experience reinforced my ability to utilize data-driven approaches in educational design, ensuring that the learning solutions I develop are both relevant and impactful. Moving forward, I plan to continue refining this analytical approach, focusing on aligning educational interventions more closely with evolving industry standards and learner expectations.
This reflective account should adequately demonstrate the application of gap analysis within the context of instructional design, highlighting both the process and its impact on the development of the educational module.
